Do Contact Lenses Protect Against UV Radiation?

It is a known fact that people use contact lenses to ensure right vision. They are better in providing stable and peripheral vision without getting fogged up in extreme weather conditions. Moreover, specific contact lenses are also known to protect your eyes against UV radiation.

Solar radiation directly strikes the surface of eye and focus or concentrates on the cornea which is an outer layer of the eye. The radiation then passes through the pupil and is absorbed by the lens. UV radiation passing through the lens may cause cataracts. It is also considered to affect the surrounding tissues of the eye. However, these special designed UV blocking contact lenses are very much helpful to protect your lens from the effect of UV radiation.

Certain UV blocking agents are included in the contact lenses which protect the eyes. They are meant to avoid the cataracts, premature degeneration of cornea or blurred vision which are likely to result from exposure of eyes to UV radiation. Some of those UV blocking agents are considered to block 90% of the UV radiation (UV-A and UV-B radiation) while some others block 99% of it. The UV blocking contact lenses protect the inner structures of your eye like iris, cornea, lens and retina. They are completely clear and are not associated with any downsides. Though they were developed long back, they have become popular recently. Therefore, they not only ensure good and corrected vision but also maintain eye health avoiding dangerous effects of UV radiation. However, it is very much necessary to consult your eye practitioner when considering to purchase UV blocking contact lenses.
