What are the Health Risks Due to Periodontal Disease

Many studies show that there is an association between periodontal diseases and other chronic inflammatory conditions such as diabetes, heart diseases , respiratory disease. Infections in the mouth can affect and damage other parts of the body. It is better to consult both general physician and a professional dentist if any inflammatory condition is suspected.

Since periodontal disease is a bacterial infection there is a possibility that periodontal bacteria can enter the blood stream and travel towards major organs which may create new infections. When the oral bacteria enters the blood stream attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributes to clot formation This blood clot may obstruct normal blood flow which restricts the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for functioning of heart. This condition may lead to heart attacks.

If diabetes is not under control there may be risks due to gum disease. People suffering from diabetes are more likely in having gum diseases and gum infections, dry mouth and cavities.

Bacterial respiratory infections can be occurred by inhaling fine droplets from mouth and throat into the lungs. The inhaled droplets may contain germs that spread and multiply within the lungs and cause respiratory diseases.

Maintaining a healthy oral hygiene can reduce the risk of affecting other body parts. The main factor that links between periodontal disease and other infections in the body is bacteria. Poor oral health may cause and affect other major parts of the body. A proper oral hygiene plays a key role in preventing the occurrence of other health diseases.
